NASU set to pull out of NLC

Published by Tribune on Mon, 21 May 2012

THE truth about the move to register a third trade union centre, in addition to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), came to light on Sunday, as a group, christened 'Integrity Group,' led by the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), revealed it is seeking registration as a separate trade union centre. The group said it wanted to pull out of the NLC and form own centre, because its members were no longer compatible and could not stay under the same umbrella with the congress anymore. The group was led by former deputy president of the NLC and general secretary of NASU, Mr Peters Adeyemi. In a statement on Sunday, the group said the NLC, even the government, could not stop it from registering a labour centre, so far it fulfilled terms of existing labour laws in Nigeria, adding that the labour law was clear enough on the registration of a new labour centre.A statement issued in Abuja, on Sunday, signed by Adeyemi and the general secretary of Hotels and Personal Services Workers, Mr Leke Success, said 'if, as a group, we feel no longer compatible with the tendencies or trajectories driving the NLC, we have the rights to move out and form a centre. No government and not even a million NLCs can stop us if we fulfill the terms of existing labour laws in Nigeria.'The group blamed the leadership crisis on the politicking surrounding the 10th delegate conference of the NLC held in March, 2011 and the sack of former NLC general secretary, Comrade John Odah.It condemned the statement credited to the acting general secretary of the NLC, Mr Owei Lakemfa, last week, about its planned registration, insinuating that it was being prompted by government.
