Manchester United travel to Wolfsburg in desperate need of a positive result. With their local rivals Manchester City having bought Wolfsburg's most prized asset in Kevin De Bruyne, which of the German side's current players would best fit the bill at Old Trafford'As always with these kind of thought experiments, the player chosen needs to be of a high enough quality and to meet United's current needs. The latter of those factors means that the choice has to be an attacking player. While a top-quality centre-half remains somewhere on United's wish list, the relative success of the side's attack and defence makes it very clear where improvement is most urgently needed. After Saturday's 0-0 draw with West Ham, it is tempting to suggest that Bas Dost would be the best fit. United created plenty of chances in that game, and the Dutchman's reputation as a finisher has grown exponentially over the past season or so.Last time out, he managed 16 goals in 17 league starts for Wolfsburg, and he has seven in 10 starts this season. In March 2015, B/R's Daniel Tiluk described Dost as, "possessing fantastic penalty-box awareness." That kind of awareness could benefit United. However, Saturday was something of an exception of late. As recently as November 10, United could boast the best shot-conversion ratio in the league, per the Mirror. The problem has generally been that the Red Devils have not created enough chances. To that end, the best choices available would be Andre Schurrle, Max Kruse or Julian Draxler. They are all multifunctional forward players, and in truth, any of those three players would be likely to improve on United's creativity in attack. Each have registered three assists in the Bundesliga this season, and each has played in a variety of forward positions, on the flanks, at No. 10 orin Schurrle and Kruse's caseup front. What really swings the choice in Draxler's favour is how neatly he fits into the bracket of "speedy and creative" wingers that Van Gaal has spoken about needing, per FourFourTwo, for example.Back in May 2014, Sky Sports ran a scouting feature on Draxler and wrote:There are few talents in world football that come close to Julian Draxler. The [then] Schalke [04] winger oozes class, and it does not take long to see why most of Europe is falling over themselves to try and grab him.Draxler is not just a winger either, which might endear him to Louis van Gaal given the United's manager's proclivity for having players who can cover multiple roles in his squad. This season,Draxler has played on the left, right and centre of midfield, at No. 10 and as a left-winger.Since he moved to Wolfsburg, he has averaged 1.8 key passes per game in both the league and the Champions League. In European competition, he has completed 89.6 per cent of his passes, suggesting he would be an adept fit for Van Gaal's system. He is an exciting player to watch, too, which would help with the atmosphere at Old Trafford this season. He is an exceptional dribbler of the ball, attempting an average of 4.2 dribbles per game in the league this season and succeeding with an average of three of thema remarkable completion rate.He has a goal each in the league and Champions League for Wolfsburgand had scored for Schalke before he made the move earlier this season.A creative and exciting multifunctional winger sounds a good fit for United at the moment. Draxler's age also fits the bill. At just 22, his best years are presumably ahead of him, and United are clearly building a squad that can grow together. Draxler would meet that profile nicely. If United were to pursue any of Wolfsburg's players, it should be Draxler. All statistics per WhoScored.com except where otherwise noted.
