UN urges Jordan to let in 12,000 Syrians stranded on border

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) ' The U.N. refugee agency says the number of Syrian refugees stranded in a remote desert area on the Jordanian border has tripled to 12,000 since last month.The agency is calling on Jordan to let in the displaced, many of them women and children.Jordan's government had no comment Tuesday. In recent months, Jordan allowed only small numbers to enter, usually several dozen a day, citing the need for stringent security checks.The international group Human Rights Watch said recent satellite images confirm thousands are stuck in the border area.In Geneva, the refugee agency said the lives of refugees will be at risk in coming winter months if they are not admitted to Jordan.
