Over 110,000 cases pending before federal, state high courts - CJN

Published by Tribune on Fri, 25 May 2012

THE Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Dahiru Mus-dapher, on Thursday, revealed that over 110,00 cases are pending before the federal and state high courts across the country, stating that the situation needed to be forestalled and addressed. The CJN, who stated this while playing host to the coordinating chairman and members of the Tax Appeal Tribunal (TAT), who paid him a visit in his office, commended the tribunal for its contribution in dispensing justice.According to the CJN, 'at present, there are over 110,000 cases pending before the federal and state high courts. This situation must be forestalled and adequately addressed.'Hence we must rise up to the challenge and provide more avenues to justice and these paths need to lead to an outcome considered satisfactory by not only the parties, but also the public as a whole.'The desire of all Nigerians for a fast, simple and efficient justice system has formed the bedrock of the ongoing judicial reform initiative and it is heart-warming to note that this desire is shared by notable organisations like the TAT.'Earlier, the coordinating chairman of the tribunal, Abraham Ndana Yisa, had said the visit was part of the plans by the tribunal to strengthen its operations and further deepen its relationship with the judiciary.According to him, 'Tax Appeal Tribunal is an important component of the tax administration system in Nigeria and the new tax policy offers a step by step objection and appeal process, which gives the complainant an opportunity to explore other dispute resolution mechanisms before gaining access to the court system.
