Published by Guardian on Sat, 26 May 2012

TO provide a new perspective to solving the problem of unemployment in Nigeria, the Chairman of the Macmillan Literary Events Committee, Mrs. Francesca Emanuel, has said that efforts must be geared towards promoting cultural values without which no individual, group, society of institution could make meaningful progress. She said this during the week, while briefing the media on the first Macmillan Youth Cultural Day, slated for Thursday, May 31 by 11 am at the Shell Hall, Muson Centre, Onikan, Lagos. The Youth Cultural Day, with the theme, Break it ' Removing impediments to youth employment through the promotion of cultural values, is an expanded version of the Macmillan Yoruba Cultural Day.According to the retired Permanent Secretary, the Yoruba Youth Literary Day was transformed into the Macmillan Youth Cultural Day for better exploration of cultural opportunities and the display of cultural talents among youth beyond the Yoruba culture.Emanuel said that maiden edition would address the problem of unemployment among the youth, which is at an alarming rate, by applying the traditional cultural beliefs and practices, which enhance the physical, mental and spiritual development of man.'Focus is therefore placed on core values like courage, respect for self and others, integrity, dignity, hard work, charity, honesty among others. Unfortunately, these sterling qualities have disappeared among most of our youth of today, rendering them deprived and unemployable.'On the whole, seventy three schools are expected at the event. Ten out of the schools invited, will explore various sub-themes and use their presentations to illustrate the barriers to youth employment which must be broken,' she said.Emanuel listed the sub-themes that will be explored to include: parental influence; educational curriculum system; teachers' relationship; social stratification; gender; guidance, counseling and mentoring; reading culture and knowledge based societies among others. She also mentioned some other literary events the publishing company is sponsoring, the Literary Nights for adults, the Literary Day for the youth and the reshaped Macmillan Cultural Youth Day.The Managing Director, Dr. A. Adenekan maintained that it is only the Macmillan among the publishing companies in Nigeria that has sustained the sponsoring of a literary project over the years.Adenekan appealed for better support from the media while he commended the chairman of the Macmillan Literary Events for her commitment to the literary projects.
