Contending Parties Flaunt Manifestoes

Published by Guardian on Sun, 24 Apr 2011

THE battle line may have been drawn by parties contesting the office of the Borno State government, barely two days to governorship polls in the state.Political parties eyeing the seat are the ruling All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the one-year old, Congress for Progressive Change (CPC).Each party along with its candidate claims it would win the April 26 gubernatorial elections, because its manifestoes are targeted at addressing poverty, unemployment, and curbing the menace of the Boko Haram religious sect. The PDP and CPC are cashing in on the weaknesses of the ruling ANPP in the last eight years, some of which include insecurity, closure of some hospitals and inability of the Ali Modu Sheriff-led administration to surmount some housing challenges. The CPC alleges that the ANPP administration has brought in more socio-economic problems and insecurity to life and property. Its candidate, Mustapha Baba Shehuri, during a recent campaign at the Maiduguri Ramat square said: The right party to beat is CPC, because the PDP has failed at both the national and state levels in addressing poverty, unemployment and the endless power outages that have lasted for over 12 years. The ruling ANPP in the state has failed the electorate in fulfilling its campaign promises made on addressing poverty, unemployment, harnessing of agricultural resources and security. He said that all the above exists despite a N2.2 billion monthly statutory federation allocations to the state.
