Fresh Attack In Plateau Leaves One Dead, Three Others Injured

Published by Guardian on Sun, 24 Apr 2011

AT least one person has been killed and three others injured in a pre-dawn attack on Bachit District of Riyom Local Government Council in Plateau State last Friday.Spokesman of the Special Task Force (STF), Captain Charles Ekeocha, confirmed this to The Guardian yesterday on telephone. Both the Senator representing the area at the National Assembly, Dr. Gyang Dantong, and the Riyom Local Government Council Chairman, Dr. Simon Mwadkwon visited the community and were told that the attack was carried out without provocation. The officials, therefore, called on the Federal Government to beef up security in rural areas, urging the people of the area not to be deterred by those who want to instill fears and scare them from voting. The relations of the deceased and the community leaders all praised the leaders for their prompt response to the situation, urging the security agencies to be more proactive to prevent future occurrence.Wife of the Senator, Mrs. Hanatu Dantong, who visited the victims at Vom Christian Hospital, where they are currently receiving medical attention, offered financial assistance to the victims to facilitate treatment.Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Emmanuel Dipo Ayeni, has warned politicians and clerics of the two major religions in the state to desist from making inflammatory statements capable of inciting chaos. At the inter-agency meeting held at the Police Officers mess, Ayeni said that the security agencies would be watching to ensure safety of lives and property. He said there would be a holistic approach to stop political gladiators from plunging the state into another round of violence. The meeting was attended by aspirants to various political offices, political leaders, security chiefs, human rights activists, community leaders and religious leaders to discuss the way forward regarding the perceived lapses of previous elections. In what looks like a threat to Tuesdays governorship election in the state, the state government said it had uncovered desperate attempts by some politicians to pitch the Berom against other ethnic nationalities in the state through unscrupulous text messages. The Special adviser on Media and Publicity to the Governor, Hon. Dauda Lamba, who made this known, told the author of the message that Plateau has outgrown any such message based on tribal sentiment, urging citizens to ignore the message but to remain focused and watchful in the remaining elections.
