Zamfara spends N2 billion on school feeding programme

GOVERNOR Abdul'aziz Yari Abubakar of Zamfara State has said that his administration had spent over N2.106billion on the feeding of its secondary schools students within its first year in office.Yari who stated this last Tuesday while addressing people of the state at the state trade fair complex, Gusau, to mark Democracy Day activities, said that the state government had re-introduced Feeding Agency, which was scrapped by the last government, in order to improve the quality and quantity of food given to students.He said that highly nutritional food is being given to students across secondary and local girls' primary schools of the state, in addition to the provision of eggs, chicken, orange and toiletries for girls' institutions in the state.According to him, government had expended the sum of N5 billion for the construction of 481 blocks of three classrooms, 24 boreholes, 24 VIP toilets and provision of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for the primary schools of the state.Commenting further, Yari disclosed that his administration had spent also N803 million for the completion of classrooms and students' hostels inherited from the last regime of Mahmud Aliyu Shinkafi in some secondary schools of the state.The governor also stated that the state government had settled the outstanding West African Examination Council (WAEC) and National Examinations Council (NECO) fees worth N200 million, for the 2010/2011 academic session also inherited from the last administration. Besides, he affirmed that over N81million has been released for the students' scholarship allowances studying in various institutions in the country.
