Afe Babalola varsity students visit Rutam House, extol The Guardian

Published by Guardian on Thu, 31 May 2012

MEDIA and Communication students of the Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti were at the Rutam House, home of The Guardian Newspapers recently, to observe the various production processes of the newspaper and interact with media professionals.Mrs. Abiodun Ogidan, who led the team said: 'we make references to The Guardian in our school, based on its well researched, published stories. The credibility of The Guardian, which has been sustained over the years, was one reason why we are visiting the newspaper organisation.''She explained that the Media And Communication department of the school was new and evolving and the visit was informed by the need to have a practical experience.'We felt that it would not be a complete education for the students to be taught everything they need to know in the class, without the exposure and understanding of how the field they would find themselves after graduating from the school looks like.''A 300 level student, Afolabi David said, 'having seen most of the departments in The Guardian, seeing how news stories are being congregated, typed, edited, designed and printed, I would have regretted, if I did not come here.''To Oriwoh Irenonfe, another 300 level student: ' What I have seen here today is unbelievable. I never believed division of labour still subsist in Nigeria. But having come here today, I have seen the importance of division of labour and its benefits, especially in a media house like The Guardian.''A 200 level student, Folaranmi Tolulope, said, 'though we have been able to see the advancement in technology, seeing what the machines used eight years ago look like and also the present one, and having learnt how news stories are gathered and being printed, yet I don't think I can work in the print media because of its tedious nature. The print media is too stressful for me.'In her response to fundamental nature of the visitation, Tolulope expressed the view that her being at The Guardian was just to get the practical aspect of what she had been taught in the class. And today, I have got more of what I could not learn in the class, she added.Another 200 level student, Bodunde Ikeola, said: 'With all have seen today, I still have a preference to work in an advertising agency to working in a print media.
