Honour M.K.O Abiola with posthumous president of Nigeria

AS controversy dogs the naming of University of Lagos after the late business mogul, Chief Moshood Abiola, by President Goodluck Jonathan, an elder statesman Ambassador Yahaya Kwande, has said honouring MKO Abiola with an institution is not enough but should be acknowledged with posthumous president of Nigeria.Speaking with the Nigerian Tribune in Jos, the elder statesman strongly condemned the protests which trailed President Jonathan's decision to rename the citadel of learning, saying that most of the reasons advanced for and against were cogent but however, cautioned against politicising the gesture.Kwande, who said there was nothing wrong in naming the university after Chief Abiola, added that the business mogul was a symbol of democracy in Nigeria, considering his political sagacity and acceptance by Nigerians, irrespective of tribe and ethnic affiliations.According to him, June 12 election was the only election in Nigeria that was widely acknowledged to be free and fair and devoid of sentiment often associated with our politics in Nigeria, adding that everybody accepted that he won the election while no one spoke against the election. still date.'There is nothing wrong with President Jonathan pronouncement, renaming University of Lagos after Chief M.K.O Abiola but it would have been better if the government had acknowledged his victory at the poll and give him posthumous president of Nigeria. Because it is widely believe and accepted that he won the 1993 election. The annulment was a watershed in the political history of Nigeria' he said.Ambassador Kwande said M.K.O Abiola contributions to sport both within the country and Africa continent as whole cannot be wish away and implored the government to name the National Stadium Lagos after him and as well acknowledge him as one the president of Nigeria.He implored the President to reconsider the issue and carry out a wide consultation to arrive at a decision that would be acceptable to Nigerians irrespective of their background adding that the controversy the gesture is presently generating is not healthy for both the government and the country.
