PDC William Hill World Darts Championship 2015: Monday Results, Updated Schedule

Published by Bleacher Report on Tue, 22 Dec 2015

Robert Thornton suffered a shock exit at the hands of Alan Norris during Monday's 2015-16 PDC William Hill World Darts Championship action, losing a whitewash against the unseeded debutant. The Thorn failed to impress from the opening throw, but full marks have to go to Norris, who showed tremendous quality and will be a player to keep an eye on after Christmas.James Wade comfortably advanced to the second round, while Michael Smith survived a scare against Dutch prodigy Jeffrey De Zwaan. Here's a look at Monday's full results and the schedule for Tuesday:All stats are courtesy of PDC.tv.RecapThe biggest shock of Monday's set of matches was undoubtedly Thornton's whitewash loss at the hands of the little-known Norris, who entered the match without a single PDC premier event title on his resume.Chuck has mainly played on the BDO circuit in recent years, and he produced the performance of a lifetime to crush the Thorn, who won the World Grand Prix earlier this season.PDC Darts couldn't believe it:Norris played superb darts, particularly on the doubles, converting over 56 per cent of his checkouts. His average of 96.88 was over eight points higher than Thornton, who looked far from his best but would have struggled against Chuck even if he had been on form.Fans at Alexandra Palace were immediately shocked in the first set, which Norris started at a frantic pace and easily swept, and he followed that up by breaking throw to start the second.Thornton was able to force a decider, only for Norris to produce an 11-darter at the perfect time and double his lead. The Thorn opened with a 121 finish in the third set, but Norris took over and won the last three legs in a matter of minutes, grabbing the win.As shared by PDC Darts, Chuck looked remarkably calm after the match:Smith needed sudden death to get past De Zwaan and avoid a second massive upset on Monday, after a complete meltdown in the second and third set. Bully Boy won just a single leg in those two sets and struggled tremendously on the doubles, but he recovered just in time to grab the win.De Zwaan deserves full credit for making life hard on the 25-year-old, however. As you can see in this video, both players were at the top of their game:Bully Boy had taken the first set 3-1 before his slide in the second and third, but another sweep in the fourth set out a fantastic decider. Tied after four legs, Smith took out 93 on the bull and seemed on his way to the next round, but his Dutch opponent hit back, setting up a nervy stretch of legs.Still tied after 10, the match moved to sudden death, and Smith had the darts. The more experienced man held his nerve, taking the sudden death at the expense of his 19-year-old opponent.De Zwaan left a big impression, however, via Live Darts:In the final match of the day, Wade was never troubled by qualifier John Michaelwho had earlier beaten Warrick Schefferto book his spot in the second round. Wade ranks among the top outsiders who could make a deep run in this year's tournament and showed his credentials on Monday, cruising to a whitewash win.He averaged just under 96 and hit three 180s, but it looks as if there's still room for improvement for the Machine, who has made the semi-final at the Ally Pally three times.Dave Chisnall and Terry Jenkins will be in action on Tuesday.
