10 schools begin Renaissance Chess tourney

RENAISSANCE Group has launched its pilot Chess-in-Schools competition in Lagos with over 10 schools participating in the maiden edition.The chess competition, according to the organisers, is designed to promote the positive effects of chess in Nigerian schools, increasing the mental stimulation of pupils and students, and to improve critical thinking among them.The10 schools include Green Meadows School, Ikeja, The Dew School, Yaba, Home Science Association Primary School, Ikoyi, NEPA Staff School, Ikorodu, and Chrisland School, Opebi. Others are Toydam School, Gbagada, Lagos Preparatory School, Ikoyi, Tots Ville School, Ikeja, Day-by-Day School, Surulere, and the University of Lagos Staff School, Akoka.The Chief Executive Officer of Renaissance Capital for West Africa, Yvonne Ike, said of the project: 'We are proud to launch the Chess-in-Schools programme, which we believe is critical to the developmental needs of the students, to enable them engage their analytical thinking and ultimately equip them with requisite life skills when introduced in the early stage of their lives.'She added that Renaissance was committed to developing this intellect-stimulating game in Nigeria to help unlock the country's vast potential, including the sphere of global intellectual sports.
