NPL Election: Minister orders hearing of Akinbobola's appeal

Published by Tribune on Mon, 04 Jun 2012

SPORTS Minister, Mallam Bolaji Abdulahi has told the Appeal Committee of the Nigeria Premier League (NPL) to sit on the case of Honourable Akin Akinbobola who is contesting the emergence of Victor Baribote as the chairman of the league board. The development reopens the long battle for the leadership of the NPL which saw Baribote upstaging Davidson Owumi through an election after which Akinbobola protested the exercise.Abdulahi who was recently confirmed as the Sports Minister had since his arrival into the sports ministry in a supervisory capacity had not hidden his intention to carry out a total clean-out of the football house with the aim of ensuring lasting peace. After a meeting with all the parties involved where he listened to their stories, the minister ordered the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to immediately write to the NPL ordering its appeal committee to within the shortest possible time hear the case filed by the Senior Special Adviser (SSA) to the Ondo State Governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko."The minister, after listening to detailed stories of the whole problem, concluded that there was no reason for the NPL appeal committee to shun Akinbobola's appeal and ordered its immediate hearing,'' disclosed a source. The minister was said to have insisted that he was out to ensure that every problem associated with the administration of the round leather game is settled, hence his charge to the NFF and the NPL to ensure that things are done well for the crisis to be buried once and for all.
