First Bank routs Plateau Rocks, eyes First Deepwater clash

Published by Guardian on Mon, 04 Jun 2012

AFTER walloping Plateau Rocks 82-38 in the first game yesterday in the ongoing final phase of the Zenith Bank Women Basketball League, First Bank is eagerly awaiting the clash against defending champion, First Deepwater Basketball Club.Coach of the team, Aderemi Adewunmi, told The Guardian yesterday after their resounding victory over Rocks would put them in good stead for a showdown with their perennial rivals.Though the 'Elephant Girls,' as the First Bank team is called, would end up second irrespective of what happens in the game, Adewunmi said it would be good if they beat the champions.'I am happy with my players' form and hope that it will propel us to victory against First Deepwater. They have beaten us in the first two phases, so the best we can end up with is a second place finish,' he said. 'However, I will be happy if we beat them here because it will be the highpoint for me this season.'He said he missed the experienced players who had left his team but commended his rookies for proving themselves: 'I have just six experienced players, with one already out due to injury,' he noted. 'The young ones are also learning the rope fast and I am very proud of their performance.Plateau Rocks' coach, Chris Wesley, said his players let him down by throwing away many scoring chances and missing their passes. He added that the change in date did not do his team any good and they did not have enough time to prepare for the Lagos leg of the league. He further advised the Nigeria Basketball Federation to expand the league so that teams could play more games and develop more talents in women basketball. Chidinma Wakama led the floor with 18 points. In some other games played, First Deepwater defeated Sunshine Angels 78-57.
