Published by Tribune on Tue, 05 Jun 2012

The Senate Joint committees on Petroleum Resources (Downstream), Appropriation and Finance, which is probing the management of fuel subsidy since 2006 has postponed its rescheduled sitting with stakeholders in the oil sector due to the crash on Sunday of a Dana Air plane in Lagos.Chairman of the committees, Senator Magnus Abe, who announced the postponement on Monday, said that the committee decided to postpone the meeting because of the Dana Air plane crash which occurred in Lagos. He said that the crash has set the nation in a mourning mood, adding that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), which is also scheduled to appear before lost one of its top officials in the crash. The senator said: "In view of prevailing situation in the country, it would be insensitive to continue with the meeting even though it had been scheduled since last Thursday."The postponement has even become necessary in the light of one of the death of Dr Levi Ajuonuma, a top management staff of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) which had also been scheduled to appear before the joint committees on Tuesday."He stated that a new date would be announced by the committee to resume the investigation. The joint Committee had last week summoned the Finance Minister Dr (Mrs) Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala; the NNPC, Petroleum Products Pricing and Regulatory Agency (PPPRA), Oando, Folawiyo Oil, as well and Gas to appear before the committee to explain their involvement in the fuel subsidy regime.
