ICAN district targets improved income, capacity building

Published by Guardian on Tue, 05 Jun 2012

TARGETING improved capacity building for its accountants, Lagos and District Society of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) has announced an enhanced liquidity of N4.7 million for the year ended 2011.The figure according to Chairman of the District, Chief Patrick Akujobi, was achieved through its policy of organising capacity building seminars and workshops, which it seeks to maintain this year.Akujobi while speaking at the district's yearly general meeting said, 'The accounts show a substantial increase in our total income primarily driven by seminars which stands at N4.7 million against N3.5 million achieved during the corresponding period of last. We had a boost from in-house training from one of our consultants and we hope this will continue in the next 12 month. He also added that the district had to put in measures to boost liquidity so as to meet its major challenge of relocating the office to a more befitting environment. 'We therefore embarked on the aggressive pursuit of seminar programmes and others social events that should help us achieve our goal. The result of this effort will begin to show up later on as we complete the first full year of our stewardship.During the period under review, our District Executive Committee visited the Doyen of Accountancy profession in Nigeria Mr. Akintola Williams, CFR, CBE on Thursday August 11, 2011 at his house on the occasion of his 92nd Birthday. The visit, which lasted for 90 minutes, was well attended and we exchanged pleasantries with the Doyen and took memorable group photographs.' Akujobi addedReading out the district's performance in the last year, Akujobi added, 'We also held members General Meeting at National Open University, which provide a forum for members to interact with each other on various issues of professional interest. We participated at the 46th Yearly Accountants Conference at Abuja in October 2011 and brought back a certificate of Attendance at the District parade. We shall continue to improve our present office facilities to provide a good and conducive working and meeting environment for the District. As members will see from the Executive Committee members' attendance list, the first six months of stewardship has been challenging in the area of members attendance of EXCO meetings. Hopefully the incoming Executive Committee members would improve on that to strengthen our District activities.
