I missed Yobo's influence in the defence, says Egwueke

Published by Guardian on Tue, 05 Jun 2012

THOUGH the Super Eagles won its game against Namibia 1-0 on Sunday, the man in the centre of the defence, Azubuike Egwueke, says he missed the inspiration of team captain, Joseph Yobo, in the match in Calabar.Speaking with The Guardian at their Metropolitian Hotel camp after the game, the Warri Wolves defender said Yobo's influence was missed greatly. He also revealed how Yobo inspired them with words of encouragement before they took on the stubborn Brave Warriors on Sunday'He told us to be calm whenever the Namibians attackers approached our defence. Yobo said that since he was not playing, we should ensure the defenceline provided a good cover for the goalkeeper throughout the game. We did just that, but it was not that easy.'The Namibians were kicking us, but we ensured they didn't penetrate our defence at will. I must commend Yobo for the step he took to come down on his own despite the injury that ruled him out of the game. That goes to show how committed he is to the national team.'Egwueke believes that with more games, the home-based players would become better, adding, 'I will say the home-based players gave a good account of themselves in the game and with more matches, our level of confidence will increase.'On how the foreign-based players relate with the home-based players in the camp, he said: 'They don't treat us as home-based players. They treat us as national team players.'We enjoy ourselves because of the way they (foreign-based) relate with us.
