Fashola meets affected foreign nationals

Published by Daily Trust on Thu, 07 Jun 2012

Lagos State governor, Babatunde Fashola, yesterday met with members of the diplomatic community whose nationals were involved in the DANA Air mishap in Iju-Ishaga area of Lagos last Sunday.Governor Fashola, who met the diplomats at the Lagos House, Ikeja, said the meeting was convened to enable him to convey condolences on behalf of the government and people of the state and to share with the diplomats the processes by which the foreign missions could identify their nationals who were involved in the mishap. The governor said the administration would also like to ask the missions what the government could do to assist them at this difficult period, saying they should contact his Commissioner for Health, Dr Jide Idris, Commissioner for Special Duties, Dr Wale Ahmed and Special Adviser on Public health for any enquiries or possible areas of assistance. He told the diplomats that the process of identifying the victims was a complex and painstaking one with many consequences that are economic and legal, and that there were laws that guide the process of possibly releasing remains of some of the identified victims to their relatives. He said right now recovery of bodies of victims was still going on at the site of the crash and until the regulatory agencies in charge of rescue operations finished, government must exercise care in dealing with bodies of victims. The governor directed that a team to be led by the state deputy governor joined a meeting scheduled for 2pm yesterday between the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Dana Air on the air mishap.
