The Gambias coach wants African support for WYC-bound teams

Published by Guardian on Tue, 26 Apr 2011

COACH Lamine Sarr of The Gambia has called for support for the four African teams that have qualified for the World Youth Championship (WYC) in Columbia later this year.Speaking after his teams exit from the African Youth Championship (AYC), Sarr said the support was necessary to ensure that the teams do well in Columbia. According to him, despite my teams exit from the AYC, we actually have to support the four teams - Mali, Cameroun, Nigeria and Egypt - that will fly Africas flag, so that they can do well at the WYC. With that support, they will go far in the competition. He further called on the four teams to begin adequate preparation as soon as the AYC ends so that they could represent the continent well, stating that his team performed badly at the AYC due to poor preparation. He said: Apart from the support they will get from the continent, the teams should also begin preparation early so that they dont fall into problems in Colombia. The moment you have adequate preparation, then you can begin to hope for the best.According to the tactician, the Nigerian team has the quality to win the AYC trophy, but it must be ready for stiff competition from the other semi-finalists if it wants to claim the top prize. He declared: I wouldnt write off Nigeria, they have quality players, but the other teams also want to win the trophy so the Nigerians must be ready for a good fight. The outcome of his teams game against Nigeria, he said, would have been different if his players took the chances that came their way: It is a pity that we couldnt capitalise on some of the chances we had, but the Eagles made use of two of their chances and that was the difference, he regretted.I have good players in my team and my hope is that they would move to a higher pedestal in their career. I must commend them for the efforts they put into the games despite the poor preparation they had.
