Published by Guardian on Tue, 26 Apr 2011

PAINTER, Donald Onuohas solo exhibition, Conversation With My Conscience, which opens at Omenka Gallery, Ikoyi, Lagos on April 29 ending May 5, 2011 offers cubism in a fresh form.Organized by Thought Pyramid Art Gallery, Abuja in partnership with Synergy Capital and Canton Concourse, the show according to Jeff Ajueshi, Creative Director of Thought Pyramid is a moment of dialogue between the inner freedom of the artist, the antediluvian and contemporary cultures.Onuohas psychological excursions result in images which represent his stream of consciousness and ultimately invites the audience to participate in his exhibition titled; Conversation with my Conscience. The director of Thought Pyramid, Ovie Omatsola, noted that creative writers and artists have no control over where and when they will be arrested and inspired by the muse(s). This is where the creative dialogue begins, unconsciously In challenging the relationship of the conscience to divine or state laws, Onuoha searches the recesses of his inner mind to reveal his relationship with people, his beliefs concerning society and the environment and his reactions to emotions like love, hate, joy sadness. He has the remarkable talent of being able to express his thoughts and feelings through words and images, communicating his views not just with words alone, but with bright and calm colours, brushes and rollers. The creative product of the artists dialogue with his conscience is rather complex and metaphorically reflects the religious and secular ambiguities of life. Onuoha acknowledges that the conscience is a battleground, where forces of good and evil struggle for superiority. Furthermore, he posits philosophically that the conscience is as much a product of the society as the society is a product of the conscience.  In advocating that man must abide the prodding of the con-science to prevent the collapse of societal norms, he advises that societal laws and norms be strengthened or else human conscience will degenerate.Through his work, Onuoha argues that the presence of virtue and vice in society is clearly evident and underscores the significance of the human conscience in guiding away from wrongful conduct.
