Edo youths'one million-man match on course

Published by Tribune on Fri, 08 Jun 2012

The plan by the umbrella youth organisation in Edo State, Edo Youth Vanguard (EYV), to embark on One million man match in Benin City, capital of Edo State, in less than two weeks from now, has received a boost, as the coordinator of the group, Barrister Mathew Idemudia, announced that security agencies have tacitly given approval for the exercise. The grouse of the youth bordered on refusal of Governor Adams Oshiomhole to reinstate the democratically elected local government chairmen he dissolved before the expiration of their tenure and the continuous use of the transition committees which the court recently ruled was illegal and a violation of the constitution.Barrister Idemudia, while speaking with members of the press in Abuja, said that Governor Oshiomhole's obstinacy among other inciting political statements, coupled with several calls for violence had heat up the polity and made the political landscape of Edo State volatile, adding that security agencies should not allow the trend to continue, especially as the July 14 governorship election is almost at hand.'The incessant use of provocative and inflammatory statements to incite the people to violence and bloodshed by Governor Oshiomhole is no more acceptable to the youths in Edo state, stating that this time around , no youth will be co-opted into 'army of thugs' previously used by politicians in the name of campaigns', Idemudia said.He said the youth group welcomed the judgment of a Benin High Court reinstating the sacked local council chairmen, stating that it was a victory for the rule of law and democracy and called on Governor Oshiomhole to, as a matter of urgency, obey the court order.
