Published by Guardian on Fri, 08 Jun 2012

ST. Augustine Seminary, Ezemgbo, Ebonyi State came first in the Atlantic Conference of the Milo Secondary School Basketball Championship while Anglican Girls' Grammar School, Asaba, Delta State triumphed in the female category to confirm their places in the grand finale in Lagos. In the keenly contested game which held on Wednesday at the indoor hall of the yet to be completed Asaba Township Stadium, the secondary school boys from Ebonyi defeated Christ Immaculate Conception College, Enugu 67 to 49.School teams from eight states made up of Akwa lbom, Cross River, Imo, Enugu, Abia, Ebonyi, Rivers, Bayelsa and host Delta took part in the championship organized by the Nigeria School Sport Federation (NSSF).In the female category, the girls from Asaba narrowly snatched victory from their resilient opponent, St. Jude Girls' Grammar School, Amarate, Bayelsa State by just a point as the final score stood at 28 to 27.The two victorious schools will proceed to Lagos come July for the national championship. At the ceremony, the Delta State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Prof. Patrick Muoboghare called on sport administrators to use only bonafide pupils/students in school sports. He advised the teams to imbibe the spirit of schools sports and focus more on the attainment of its objectives as an educational programme and an avenue for the discovery of budding talents, maintaining that the winning at all cost should be discouraged. The Nestle Branch Manager, Funmi Osinneye, said the company has assisted in nurturing the growth and development of sports in Nigeria and Africa, saying the first conference final in this year's edition has been very spectacular with the array of talents on parade.
