Jigawa plans sports complex at NYSC Camp

Published by Guardian on Fri, 08 Jun 2012

IN a bid to make the newly constructed National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp useful to Jigawa State when the corps members are not in session, the state government says it will build a sports complex within the camp. The Commissioner for Information, Youths and Sports, Babandi Gumel, told journalists after the state executive council meeting on Wednesday that the council has ratified the contract worth N93,126,123,35 for additional work on the NYSC camp.'The contract involves the construction of additional sporting facilities to cater for a proposed sports complex in the camp so that it can be utilised by the state when the NYSC orientation is not on,' he said. 'Council has therefore approved the change of name of the camp to NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp/Sports Centre.'According to him, the contract has been awarded to Onoha Enterprises Limited. Gumel had earlier revealed that the state embarked on the construction of the NYSC orientation camp to give students of Government Secondary School, Gumel, a break from the disruptions in their academic calendar. This is because, their school, at least three times every session, has been used over the years as temporary orientation camp, leading to poor academic performance. He said the government decided to commit about N800 million into the construction of the permanent orientation camp in Dutse to save the students the unnecessary disruptions in their academic calendar.
