Spacious Look For Small Rooms

Published by Guardian on Sat, 09 Jun 2012

IF your small room feels cramped and uncomfortable, there are some simple solutions that you can use to maximise space and make the place feel inviting.Use of windowsWindows can be used to visually enlarge a small room. This is because your eye moves beyond the wall to the outdoor view and embraces it as part of your living space. Windows with draperies that match the colour of the walls eliminate boundaries and make the place look more spacious. For privacy, use simple shades or blinds that can be pulled out of the way during the day. In addition, make windows seem taller by hang draperies just below the ceiling. Widen windows visually by extending draperies beyond the window frame.Choose small-size furnishingLarge furnishing makes a room seem small. Neatly upholstered pieces with compact frames and leggy pieces without skirted bottoms allow you to see through them to the walls and floors, creating the illusion of space.Keep a small room white and lightThe age-old decorating adage can apply here. Light colours open up a room, while dark colours keep a space cozy. Give your room the illusion of spaciousness by making elaborate use of white. White surfaces bounce light around the room, keeping a small space feeling bright and open. The white could be used for walls and draperies, and contrast created with the wood floors and table for balance.Make small rooms feel tallerCreate the illusion of height with vertical lines that lead the eye from floor to ceiling. A seemingly higher ceiling adds breathing space, particularly if the walls are also painted a soft colour. Mounting draperies at ceiling height around a window achieves the same effect, just as hanging a collection of artwork on a wall toward the ceiling.Use fewer colours in a small roomToo many colours can be chaotic when it comes to small spaces. Select a few and stick with them. Then use a few colourful accent pieces, such as pillows and decorative accessories to add character.
