Campbell's is going to start voluntarily labeling its many products that contain GMOs

Published by Business Insider on Fri, 08 Jan 2016

Cans of Campbell's Chicken Noodle Soup andboxes of Goldfish Crackers will soon say they contain genetically modified ingredients, a.k.a. GMOs, on their packages.Campbell's, which also makes products including Prego, Pepperidge Farm, and V8, announced Thursday that it supports a national law that would require companies to label allfoodsthat containGMOs.But the company is not removing GMOs from any of its products, and it touts the safety of these ingredients, which include the vast majority of the corn, soybean, canola, and sugarbeet grown in the US.GMOs typically refer toplants thatscientists have deliberately altered the genome of using scientific DNA modifying techniques in a lab. Farmers used to rely on techniques like cross-breedingimprove their crops, tweaking them bit-by-bit to achieve the things like better yields and larger vegetables, but GMO technology has allowed for more targeted and specific changes. While the concern over GMOs is growing in the general public, a majority of scientists agree that they are safe. Campbell expresses this sentiment on its website describing the ingredients in its products, whatsinmyfood.com."We are comfortable using these genetically modified crops because scientists and the FDA, who have been studying genetic engineering for many years, agree that food ingredients made with these methods are safe and arent different from other ingredients," the company writes.Campbell's Chief Executive, Denise Morrison, told The New York Times that about three-quarters of its products likely have GMOs.The label it will add to Campbell'sSpaghettiOs, for example, will say: "Partially produced with genetic engineering. For more information about G.M.O. ingredients, visit WhatsinMyFood.com."No national law requiring companies to label products with GMOs exists yet, but a number of states are trying to pass their own such laws. Vermont's will go into effect thisJuly. In explaining its support for a national law, Campbell cited a 2014 poll from Consumer Reports that found 92% of Americans are in favor of labeling. A follow-up Consumer Reports poll from December 2015 found that number had dropped slightly to 88%.Join the conversation about this storyNOW WATCH: New USDA dietary guidelines have good news for coffee drinkers ' and drop breakfast recommendation and cholesterol warnings
