Union Bank's dominance continues at Lagos T/Tennis League

Published by Tribune on Tue, 12 Jun 2012

AFTER the conclusion of Week Three of the ongoing Lagos Table Tennis League, Union Bank Sports club dominance at the tournament continued unabated as the men and women teams emerged champions.Despite the inclusion of four new teams, the bankers' team remained unchallenged for the third week, with the teams ruling in the men's event while they also repeated the same feat in the women's division. For this, Union Bank teams are now topping the tables, while youthful Springfresh teams are trailing them.According to the technical director of the Lagos State Table Tennis Association (LSTTA), the registration of the four teams was inspired by Portugal-based Gbenga Anthony.'Anthony's participation in the championship has added value, colour and world wide recognition to the tournament. It was also an opportunity for our home-based players to test their skills against their foreign-based counterparts. It was quite an unforgettable experience for our local players. Anthony's team managed to win two out of the four matches in their group during the round robin matches. This alone has inspired the home-based players and we look forward to an improvement this week,' Peters said.He added: 'The home-based players were so excited and were full of praise for the initiative of the organizers to allow Anthony to take part in the league. It was quite some lesson to learn there, and this shows that our home-based players are good as their foreign counterparts if given the same opportunity.'He however, lauded the sponsors for bankrolling the tourney, which has afforded the players the opportunity to showcase their talents. 'I commend the Oniru Royal family for creating this avenue to bring this discovery about. When the present day players playing in the league eventually become world beaters, they will for ever remember the Royal family for their support,' the international umpire said.
