Cross River hosts South-South All Comers tourney today

ALL is now set for the Cross River State/South South All Comers Athletics Championship holding today at the U.J. Esuene Stadium, Calabar, featuring about 400 athletes.The state also said it was ready to host the second Cross River/All Nigeria Athletics Championship from June 19 to 21, which will serve as trials for the Nigerian contingent to the London 2012 Olympic Games.Speaking about the events over the weekend in Calabar, the Director of Sports, Dr. Jude Amadi, said, 'as you can see, we have series of championships, especially in this June. We have just concluded the third edition of the Cross Rover Primary/Secondary Schools Athletics and Swimming Championships.'Immediately after that, we successfully hosted the Super Eagles 2014 World Cup Brazil qualifier against the Brave Warriors of Namibia. We won that match and on the 12th of this month (today), Cross River will also be hosting the Cross River State/South South All Comers Athletics Championship.'Amadi, who reassured Nigerians that the state was ready to host all the competitions, added: 'Though this championship is for athletes in the zone, it is also open to the elite athletes. But the secondary and primary schools aspect of it is for South-South states.'According to him, the state would also host the Super Eagles' Africa Nations Cup qualifier against Rwanda on June 17 and the second All Nigeria/Cross River State Athletics Championship from June 19 to June 21.He noted: 'In all these championships, we are going to feature our discovered talents, elite athletes and the strategy is designed to equip and build them up ahead of the National Sports Festival and the Olympics.
