ANSU students demonstrate over increase in fees

Published by Guardian on Thu, 28 Apr 2011

ANAMBRA State University (ANSU) has witnessed one of its saddest moments in its history, as some students of the institution went on demonstration to protest the recent school fees increment.Aggrieved students set up road blocks, restricting human and vehicular movements that halted lectures in the school. One of the protesters who spoke to The Guardian said the cause of their demonstration was school fees. We are demonstrating because the school has increased our school fees by over 150 percent of what we (returnee students) used to pay. From thirty something thousand naira, the fees were increased to almost N100, 000 and now we are protesting because we are not going to pay it. It is very outrageous, government should do something about it. We are protesting and rioting peacefully and the police are throwing teargas at us and it is getting out of hand.Another angry student warned that if the school management and the state government fold their arms, they will  do something. He continued: we will close down the school,  because I cant imagine a student paying N86,000 thousand naira and my father has five of us in this school. We are not comfortable with the school fees increment. We have suffered a lot. Some of our girls (students) have gone into prostitution, while some boys have taken into social vices just to make ends meet and some students are sponsoring themselves in this university. According to some protesters, two students of the institution have been hospitalized at an unknown hospital  One protester said: some students have been chased out of class and some have been prevented from sitting for some courses until they pay up their school fees.  Some of us have dropped out of school because they could not pay. Some parents have three, four children in this institution and that is very inconvenient for usWhen contacted, the Universitys Student Affairs Assistant Dean, Rev. Sr. Therese Okeke told The Guardian that the inst was not part of the students demonstrations.  When contacted, the Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO) of Anambra state, Emeka Chukwuemeka, confirmed the incident. He affirmed that the break down of law and order at the Igbariam junction necessitated the police intervention and the use of teargas to disperse the students who were obstructing human and vehicular movement on public highway.
