Three feared killed in Delta post polls crisis

Published by Guardian on Thu, 28 Apr 2011

AN orgy of violence yesterday swept across Ekpan, near Warri, as three persons were feared killed while others were seriously injured following heavy gun-fire in the area by protested suspected to be loyal to the Democratic Peoples Partys (DPP) governorship candidate, Great Ogboru. The protesters were said to haven taken to the streets in protest immediately news filtered into the city that Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was leading in results declared in Asaba, the state capital. Also in Ughelli, an unspecified number of people were also feared wounded in a similar protest. It was learnt that the protesters, who were said to be mainly supporters of Ogboru, took to the streets, allegedly armed and started shooting immediately report came from Asaba that Uduaghan was leading in the results declared so far. Though, a source said yesterday that three people had lost their lives in the violence, the Divisional Police Officer in Ekpan, Mauzu Mohammed, told The Guardian that only one person was injured. He said: What I can tell you is that supporters of two rival political groups, the PDP and DPP, were fighting each other here. The DPP group said they heard report that Uduaghan was leading their man (Ogboru). Both the police, army and Navy are on ground here and we will make sure there is no loss of lives and property. On the issue of persons killed, Mohammed said: I am yet to get such report. They only called me about five minutes ago that one person was shot. I dont know if he died or not. But like I said, we have taken absolute control of the situation here. However, a source said the protest yesterday in Ekpan had no political undertone as it said that the action was due to the alleged overbearing influence of a youth leader, one Newton Agbofodoh. He was said to have used his political influence to terrorise the people for some time now and the protesters wanted him removed.
