Fayemi celebrates, Fayose kicks as ACN sweeps Ekiti

Published by Guardian on Thu, 28 Apr 2011

WORK began in Ekiti State Governors Office with the popping of champagne in celebration of the overwhelming victory of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). The party won all the three senatorial seats and six seats of the House of Representatives.Besides, the ruling party secured 24 out of 26 seats in the state House of Assembly, leaving the remaining two for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti-East State Constituency 2 and Ido/Osi 1.Results released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) yesterday and signed by the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Hussain Pai, showed that the ACN candidate, Babafemi Ojudu, scored 63,747 to defeat former governor of the state, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, who got 29,773 votes. The PDP candidate, Kayode Alufa, scored 29,488 votes. In Ekiti-North Senatorial District, Mr. Olu Adetumbi scored 58,568 votes to defeat the incumbent Senator Ayo Arise of the PDP who got 38,422 votes. In Ekiti-South Senatorial District, Mr. Tony Adeniyi of the ACN won with 70,360 votes while the incumbent Senator Sola Akinyede of the PDP scored 43,537.Former Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Opeyemi Michael Bamidele of the ACN bagged 42,075 votes in Ado-Ekiti/Irepodun/Ifelodun Federal Constituency while Tope Aluko of the PDP scored 13,774 votes. At Emure/Gbonyin/Ekiti-East, Faparusi Bamidele of the ACN polled 31,848 votes to defeat Bamishile Olufemi of the PDP who scored 21,619 votes. At Ekiti-South West/Ikere/Ise Orun Federal Constituency, Arowosoga Ifeoluwa of the ACN scored 37,747 votes, while former Ambassador to Canada, Dare Bejide of the PDP, polled 21,222 votes.Apparently happy by the landslide victory recorded by the ACN, Fayemi and other government functionaries celebrated in Ado-Ekiti yesterday. He said the victory has proven that he was the real winner of the 2007 governorship election. But the former governor of the state, Ayo Fayose, has rejected the result, arguing that it did not represent the true position of the minds of independent and un-induced Ekiti electorate.Fayose, who lost to Ojudu, alleged that the election was marred by violence, open financial inducement and official manipulation. However, Senator Ayo Arise has congratulated Adetunmbi of the ACN who defeated him, saying he has done his best and wished the senator-elect well.
