Women of Owu on stage for students

Published by Guardian on Wed, 13 Jun 2012

FOR the benefits of secondary school students preparing for WAEC and NECO, the Department of Classics, University of Ibadan, Oyo State, is staging Women of Owu, a school text for both examinations everyday from 2pm all through the week for the appreciation and benefits of students. Admission is free. Venue is Theatre Arts auditorium, University of Ibadan. For Head of Classics Department, Dr. Olakunbi Olasope, the idea is to give students first hand performance experience of the creative environment of the play so as to ease their understanding of it while preparing for their final examinations.Osofisan's historical play about war, Women of Owu, is an adaptation of Greek's Euripides' play, Trojan Women, which held its command performance last Sunday at the Theatre Arts auditorium of the university. Students of the university's Theatre Arts Department also performed the play, with Dr. 'Tunde Awosanmi as artistic director. Women of Owu will run throughout the week before the curtain finally falls on Saturday. The staging of the play is part of Classics Department's social responsibility designed to help students to also realise the play on stage, as a way of sharpening their critical imagination.Women of Owu is being performed in collaboration with Chevron Nigeria Ltd. Olasope is excited at the opportunity of the department to connect with the public via the instrumentality of the play that examines a unique aspect of Nigeria's historical reality.
