Senate C'tee pledges to offset contractors' debt

Published by Tribune on Thu, 14 Jun 2012

THE Chairman, Senate Committee on sports, Senator Ibrahim Adamu Gumba, has promised that he would do everything within his capability to ensure that contractors who are being owed for various projects carried out at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium are paid their entitlements.Gumba made this declaration when he led other members of the Senate Committee on Sports on an inspection of the stadium facilities in Ibadan. He said the committee's visit was spurred by the inability of the country to find a suitable stadium for the national team during the last Africa Nations Cup/World Cup qualifier against Namibia two weeks ago. When answering questions from journalists on abandoned projects and some that were almost completed at the stadium, Senator Gumba said: "Although ours is an oversight function, but in such situation I'll see what we can do as regards that as I've even met with some of them.''"For the contractors who have completed their work and have not been paid or were paid halfway, well I am not the Director-General or the minister of sports, I am a lawmaker. But I assure you when I go back I will draw the attention of the DG and the minister to the issue and urge them to try and pay these people," he said. Those that have completed their jobs should be paid, those that have not completed their jobs should be paid what commensurates with whatever they have done in order to complete the sections that have been done. This will be done Insha Allah," Gumba assured.
