Yekini wished to be buried in Ibadan 'Lawyer

Published by Tribune on Thu, 14 Jun 2012

ANOTHER dimension was added to the controversy surrounding the death and burial of late Super Eagles striker Rashidi Yekini as it was revealed that his family acted against his wish by burying him outside Ibadan.Making this fresh revelation was the lawyer of the Nigerian record goal scorer Mohammed Jubril while speaking at a programme 'day of tibutes' organised in honour of Yekini by the Sports Writers' Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Oyo State Chapter on Monday.According to him, immediately he learnt of Yekini's death, he made efforts to make sure that his wish of being buried in Ibadan was filfilled but met a brickwall as his family insisted on burying him in Ira his home town"Yekini believed he became what he was in Ibadan and therefore, wished that if he dies, everything about his interment should be done in Ibadan."After he had been buried, I tried to convince them (the family) to allow his eighth- day prayer to take place in Ibadan but they refused, that was why I decided to take the bull by the horn and fight it out for his 40th day fidau prayer to be held here. It was a tug of war before I eventually prevailed to have it done in Ibadan.Since it was agreed that the event will be held here, I have made many contacts trying to get support for a successful programme, but beside Dimeji Lawal who has joined me in running around, no other person has so far responded,'' said Mohammed.
