...Want embargo on new stadium construction

CHAIRMAN, Senate Committee on Sports and Social Development, Senator Ahmed Adamu Gumba, has said that there is no need to build new stadia in the country for now given the prevailing circumstances. Gumba, stated this on Wednesday while speaking with sports journalists after inspecting the facilities at the National Stadium, Lagos."I'm of the opinion that we don't need new stadia in this country but rather, we should develop the right attitude to properly maintain the existing facilities that we have. The senate mandated this committee to come and see the state of the National Stadium here based on the public outcry of Nigerians.''In fact, Nigerians are wonderful people if these facilities here can be abandoned this way and we have confirmed now that a lot of work must be done to make it a truly National Stadium. This is a national edifice but it is not what it used to be," Gumba said.He assured that the committee will ensure that its recommendations after the approval of the senate are carried out efficiently."We will take a decisive decision and also conduct regular visits to ensure that money meant for the maintenance of these sporting facilities is well utilised," Gumba said.Also on the entourage to Lagos, was Senator Mudashiru Hussein (Vice Chairman) and Senator Babajide Omoworare, a member of the committee.
