Falcons Massacre Zimbabwe, Win 4-0 In Lagos

Published by Guardian on Sun, 17 Jun 2012

IT was a double celebration for Nigeria yesterday, as members of the Super Falcons made good their promise by hammering the Mighty Warriors of Zimbabwe 4-0 in the second leg of the 2012 African Women Championship (AWC) qualifiers in Lagos. With the result, the Coach Kadiri Ikhana-led Falcons have qualified for the tournament scheduled for South Africa on a 6-0 goals aggregate, having won the first leg 2-0, two weeks ago in Harare. The game played at the Teslim Balogun Stadium was barely six minutes old, when reigning African Player of the Year, Pepertua Nkwocha, opened scoring. The celebration had not died down when Delta Queens' striker, Desire Okparanozie, increased the tally to two in the 14th minutes.Esther Sunday made it three in the 16th minutes, while speed star, Stella Mbachu, increased the tally to four in the 55th minutes. The goals could have be more, but for the Zimbabwean goalkeeper, Onai Chingowo, who made some saves for her country.Coach Ikhana made three changes in the game with Ebere Orji coming in for Nkwocha, while Glory Iroka substituted Rita Chikwelu. Esther Sunday came in Helen Ukaonu. At the end of the game yesterday, Ikhana said that he would work on the few lapses noticed in the team before the commencement of the AWC in South Africa. He said that the team was a bit uncoordinated in the game because of the introduction of some new faces in the squad. He, however, stated that the Falcons have what it takes to do the country proud when hostilities begin in the AWC later in the year.
