FERMA sets up committees on road maintenance

FACED with the herculean task of raising funds for its road operations, the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) has set up two to fashion out strategies for generating or accessing additional revenue for carrying out road maintenance in the countryThe committees known as Stakeholder Committee on Road Maintenance and FERMA Stakeholder Committee on Road Maintenance Funding are part of the fulfilment of the law backing the operations of the agency.Members of the committees were drawn from the National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) Association of Luxury Bus Owners of Nigeria (ALBON) and management staff of the Agency.FREMA Director, Mr. Gabriel Amuchi, an engineer, who inaugurated the two committees last week in Abuja said the measure would further promote the progress in the road maintenance area of the transformation agenda.He observed that the stakeholders committee on funding is to consider and explore ways of additional funding for road maintenance, ensure that monies generated are properly allocated to the maintenance of Federal roads all over the country and match funds generated to existing programme of works of the agency and any other matter related to funding or financing of maintenance of Federal roads in Nigeria.Amuchi said other Terms of Reference of the Stakeholders' Committee would include to implement policies in the road transport sector with reference to road maintenance; assist in engaging relevant government agencies in the implementation of the funding provisions in the FERMA (Amendment) Act, 2007 as well as develop the requisite framework for regular meetings between FERMA and major stakeholders in the road infrastructure sub sector and any other related matter.
