How to create job for youths in rural areas

Published by Tribune on Tue, 19 Jun 2012

Governments have been urged to create the enabling environment in the rural communities to boost agriculture and curb urban drift, especially among young people. That was the kernel of communique issued at just concluded seminar on 'Business and job creation', held at Ikenne, Ogun State.Speaking at the seminar, Pastor Tosin Onayiga, a senior pastor of the Ransomed Christian Centre, Ikorodu, blamed the government at various levels for not doing enough to create awareness about numerous job opportunities available in rural communities.'We turned out graduates from our higher institutions every year, we should let them realise that there are abundant job and business opportunities in rural communities , especially in the field of agriculture, instead of waiting for white collar jobs that are becoming very difficult to come by.'The communique also urged government to provide adequate infrastructure in the rural areas to make life comfortable for people.'Government should provide access roads in rural areas to enhance transportation of farm produce. Social amenities too must be made available to discourage movement to urban centres.'The communique also stated that the church has a prominent role to play by encouraging people to go into agriculture and provide social welfare and financial assistance to those willing to go into farmingIt was also stated that interest and passion were the two major tools needed to succeed in agriculture, 'to make it in farming, interest and passion are the two keys you need and the moment you have the two, other things will follow.''Don't start a farming business with a bank loan. Again, avoid employing family members and friends as managers, don't give out your farm products as gifts and finally, don't expect immediate profit.
