Protest trails Uduaghans re-election

Incumbent Govenor of Delta State,Emmanuel Uduaghan, on Thursday, emerged the winner of the gubernatorial election by polling a total of 525,793 votes to beat his rival, Chief Great Ogboru of Democratic Peoples Party (DPP) who had 433,834 votes. Obarisi Ovie Omo Agege of Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) placed third with 15,526 votes while a former member of the state House of Assembly and candidate of All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), Dr George Oyefia, came fourth with 7,893 votes.Uduaghans re-election, however, sparked off protests in Asaba and parts of the state.Announcing the result in Asaba, the returning officer for the election, Professor Richard Anao,  vice-chancellor of the University of Benin said Uduaghan, the PDP candidate secured 50 per cent of the total votes cast in 21 of the 25 local government areas.Shortly after the result was announced, members of the DPP poured into the streets in Asaba protesting the results from some local government areas especially that of the three Warri Local Governments in the creek.The protesters marched through Nnebsis Road peacefully, but there was stampede at Ogbogonogo market area where the leadership of DPP led by Great Ogboru met and admonished them not to take the laws into their hands.
