Action Alliance rejects election results in Oyo

Published by Tribune on Fri, 29 Apr 2011

The Oyo State chapter of the Action Alllance  (AA) has denounced the entire electoral exercise which produced the candidate of Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Senator Abiola Ajimobi, as the governor-elect, describing as illegal its exclusion from participating in the entire process. The partys scribe, Mr  Olu Omotoso, in a statement in Ibadan, on Thursday, described the action of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as illegal, undemocratic and unfair with a pledge to challenge the whole process in the court of law.We in Action Alliance (AA) Oyo State wish to reject the 2011 general election conducted by INEC and we reject the result in its entirety. The widely acclaimed free and fair election cannot be passed as credible in that AA was illegally excluded from the contest, as such it cannot be said to be fair.Theexclusion of our party logo and name came to us as a surprise since we fulfilled all laid down rules from primary to nomination and submission. We had since written INEC to demand explanation of the illegal act, but the electoral agency did not budge, even with a court order from an Abuja Federal High Court issued on the 7th of April2011, compelling INEC to include Action Alliance on the ballot papers, it stated.INEC, in defiance of the High Court Order conducted the National Assembly, presidential and gubernatorial elections without including Action Alliance on the ballots. We were, therefore, surprised at the inclusion of our party logo on the ballot papers for the state Assembly election alone while we fielded candidates for all elective postsin the elections, the statement read in part. The party, therefore, condemned the detestable and abysmal disregard to democratic norms by the electoral body, saying,We must state that any result or votesrecorded for our party cannot be regarded as a true show of our strength because the pre-election damages done to our party by INEC is enormous, demoralising and had weakened our peoples morale. As a result, it said that its legal team had been briefed on what he called undemocratic development, promising that the party shall explore all legal means to ensure that justice is not only done but seen to have been done.
