Enugu residents task gov-elect on empowerment, minimum wage

Published by Tribune on Fri, 29 Apr 2011

Some residents of Enugu have urged the states governor-elect, Sullivan Chime,  to  ensure youth empowerment and payment of the approved new minimum wage. A cross section of the people who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recently in Enugu said the new governor should ensure the creation of jobs for the youth.Mr Albert Eneoli, an applicant, said government should build industries in order to create jobs for the youths. Many of the youths in this state have gone into stealing and kidnapping because of lack of jobs. So I am calling on Governor Chime to make job creation a priority, Eneoli said.Mr Arinze Onyia, a civil servant, said he wanted the governor-elect to implement the minimum wage of N18, 000 when he assumed office.I want the  governor to urgently pay the minimum wage to enable us to meet our family needs, Onyia said.Mr Victor Ogakwu, a Lagos-based businessman, said he returned home to enable him to vote in the governorship election.According to him,  the governor should be close to the people and interact with them often to know their needs,I say this because some governors are shielded by aides, who do not tell them the truth. So, the new governor should meet with the people occasionally, Ogakwu suggested.Mrs Victoria Ani, a businesswoman appealed to the  governor to appoint more women into positions, so as to give them a sense of belonging. We have qualified women in Enugu State, so their services should be utilised in order to move the state forward.
