CCC takes stock, plans for better league, T20 championships

Published by Guardian on Wed, 20 Jun 2012

AFTER taking stock of its performance in the just concluded 2011/2012 season, the Lagos State Club Cricket Committee (CCC) says it has set plans in motion for a better outing next season, which starts in the later part of the year. The CCC organised the Iris Smart Technologies Limited League and the GTAssur T20 competitions, which brought the season to April. According to officials of the Lagos State Cricket Association (LSCA), CCC had to apply the Q1 vote from the government to organise the state's T20 cricket tourney in view of the very limited time available before the outset of the rainy season.Speaking on the performance of the association, a member of the board, Barnaby Ephraim, told The Guardian yesterday that nine teams submitted entries for participation in the T20 competition with 144 cricketers, comprising indigenous and foreign nationals from Ghana, India and Pakistan. He named the participating teams to include BRF Cricket Club (BRFCC), Federal Government College Warri Old BoysCricket Club (FGCW), Government College Ibadan Old Boys Cricket Club (GCIOB), Foundation Cricket Club (FCC) 1 and 2 and Ibadan Metropolitan Cricket Club (IMCC).'Ibeju Lekki Cricket Club (ILCC), Redbull Cricket Club (RBCC) and Lagos Asians Cricket Club (LACC) also took part in the competition, with BRF emerging the champion, while Federal Government College Old Boys Cricket Club came second,' he said.According to Ephraim, the LSCA is looking into ways of bringing more sponsors to the association's programme, just as it has started some grassroots development efforts to ensure that more youths take to the game.'The youths hold the key to the future of the game in Nigeria and to remain ahead of others, we have taken it to schools to catch the players young,' he added. 'Apart from the traditional cricket playing schools, we feel that introducing the game to others will help us in building a great future for the game.
