A Royal Wedding

Published by Guardian on Fri, 29 Apr 2011

AN unlikely fairy tale romance, involving a member of the Royalty and a commoner, which in the last few months have captured the imagination of the entire world, becomes reality today, when Prince William Arthur Philip Louis, the elder son of Prince Charles and Princess Diana (of blessed memory), weds his long-time girlfriend, Kate Middleton at the famous even if ancient Westminster Abbey in London.Although the historic ceremony will be held under tight security amid fears of terrorist attacks, the event promises to be the singular widest-followed around the world, if the build-up by the local and worldwide media is anything to go by. There is not a newspaper, magazine, radio or television station, which has not given a pride of place to this latest Royal Wedding, which television audience is guaranteed to be in excess of two billion viewers around the globe. If any event could be credited with a wider viewership than todays high-profile wedding, that event must be the burial ceremonies in honour of the departed Lady Diana, the Princess of Wales, who incidentally is the mother of Prince William, todays most celebrated groom. If the British monarchy, or the fabled House of Windsors could have their way, there would not be the slightest mention or reference to the late Lady Diana, who remains in the minds of many easily the most elegant and most charismatic woman-ever in British Royal history. While not attempting to unravel old wounds by recollecting ugly events which were unfortunately climaxed by the death of the Peoples Princess, there is no way she would not be remembered, if just for the glamour or common touch she brought to the conservative Royal Family, and most especially for the way she raised her two boys (Princes William and Harry), and lastly for the genuine and doting love which existed and still exists between mom (Lady Diana) and her princes. And so, as William and Kates wedding today is the culmination of an eight-year romance, it is also the fruit of another great love: that of a mother for her son. If others can pretend there was no Diana in the history of the British Monarchy, William, just 14 when his loving mom died, promised never to forget his mom and her undiluted love. When his mom was stripped of her official Royal title of Princess of Wales, William, then only 14 remember, tried to comfort her. Dont worry, Mummy, I will give it back to you one day when I am King. That mom-son love perhaps led to Prince Williams decision to present his heartthrob (Kate) with his mothers diamond and sapphire engagement ring. One hopes that the ring which evidently brought Diana only betrayal, unhappiness, and, ultimately, death in a Stygian Paris underpass, would bring for Kate everything her departed mom-in-law wished for herself. To be sure, Lady Di will be nowhere to be seen today and thereafter, but her ghost will be everywhere. She will be there, most obviously, in the groom himself. Braidly tightly in the DNA is that bashful, flirtatious, glancingsideways thing he does (as Lady Di did) when working a crowd. She will be there in the blue eyes and the ready laughter of the tall, fair boy she nicknamed DDG (Drop Dead Gorgeous). She will be there in his affectionate nature and his instinctive way with children. One of Dianas many gifts to son William is a blessed ease with people from different backgrounds. With all the similarities between late mom and her now grown-up prince, what the Prince (William) and his once-a-commoner future Queen (Kate, now Catherine) can do without is the perpetual pursuit of newshounds and the paparazzi, who in Williams words, hounded my mom to death. As many are beginning to find out, Lady Dis name and legacies will never be bound for the dustbin of history. Prince Harry, sharing his brothers views, paid tributes to his mom, calling her quite simply the best mother in the world. Harry added, We miss her. She kissed us last thing at night. Her beaming smile greeted us from school. She encouraged us when we were nervous, or unsure. To lose a parent so suddenly at such a young age is indescribably shocking and sad. With the spirit of his mom ever beside him, Prince William appears ready to take on the demanding responsibilities of the future king of England, and his wife (Catherine) a future Queen. He is his own man, and as a Royal source put it, if he decides he doesnt want something, you cant move him.Such fierce independence of mind can be an asset in a world starched and stiffened by protocol. Like his late mother, William, the future King William V of England, is an instinctive modernizer.Diana, were she alive, would surely have approved of William and Kates decision to forgo wedding gifts, asking instead that donations be made to charity. And how happy she (Diana) would have been that a once-homeless young woman named Shazna, who met William at Centrepoint (Dianas favourite charity), will today take her seat among the VIPs in Westminster Abbey at Prince Williams personal invitation.Diana would have loved her daughter in-law, whose romance and subsequent marriage was not arranged like Dianas. It is not a surprise that this marriage has indeed captured the imagination of the world, and made more friends for the British Monarchy. At a time, many parts of the world are ravaged by one natural disaster after another, and Democracy demonstrators are being massacred by sit-tight leaders, mostly in the Arab world, this Royal Wedding comes as a welcome celebration of the sanctity of marriage, and stability in human development. In a time largely filled with so much adversity, todays celebration gives the world hope, that mankind can momentarily forget the miseries which abound around the world. For the future King of England, it is time to be healed of the trauma of his mothers death, as he begins, amongst other roles, to further modernize the Royalty, while helping to bridge the gap between the privileged and the common man.William and Kate, this is your day. The world shares your celebration. Have a blessed and fruitful union.
