Falcons stake pride against Ghanas Black Queens without professionals

Published by Guardian on Fri, 29 Apr 2011

AGAIN, the Super Falcons of Nigeria will attempt to fly past their sworn rivals, Ghana Black Queens, in this weekends All Africa Games qualifier in Abuja relying mainly on local players. In 2008, the Black Queens forced some bitter pills down the throat of the Super Falcons during the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games qualifier at the El-Wak Stadium in Accra, following the decision of the teams handlers to prosecute the match without professionals. In that particular encounter, former skipper, Christie George, conceded an own goal through a back pass to goalkeeper Precious Dede following pressure to give the Ghanaians just their second victory over Falcons. Now, coach Eucharia Uche is set to line up a squad comprising mainly home-based players against Ghana on Sunday. It was learnt yesterday that the coach could not secure the release of her key players such as Perpetua Nkwocha, Cynthia Uwak and Stella Mbachu, among others, for the tie, which is the first leg of 2011 All Africa Games qualifiers. To some followers of female football, every match against Ghana requires full Super Falcons squad to avoid walking a tight rope.Coach Uche is said to have told the Nigeria Football Federation not to have sleepless night over the non-availability of Nkwocha and others for the Sunday match, building confidence, rather, on players from the local league to beat Ghana.
