Commissioner reads riot act to Bornu absentee teachers

Published by Guardian on Thu, 21 Jun 2012

PIQUED by the rising rate of absentee teachers in secondary schools in Borno State, the Commissioner of Education, Hon. Inuwa Musa Kubo has urged the affected teachers to quit, if they cannot contribute their quotas to support government in improving the education sector that had been put a state of emergency by Governor Kashim Shettima. The commissioner made the quit notice to teachers recently, when he paid an unscheduled visit to one of the secondary schools being renovated in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital. He lamented that the absence of the principal, and his deputies; along with a large number of teachers during the school hours, cannot be condoned, especially under the the current state of emergency in the education sector. He warned: 'Government would not wait and allow absentee workers rubbish its intention to improve this sector. Besides, the Kashim Shettima administration has spent a lot of money to renovate eight secondary schools and build new ones. It has purchased instructional materials and textbooks for students and teachers, while we introduced incentives to encourage our teachers. But I am surprised and disappointed that most of the teachers were not even on duty to teach these students.'I decided to embark on this unscheduled visit so as to see things for myself and I must confess that I am not happy at all about this. Any teacher who is not ready to stay in school should quit immediately.'He cautioned the teachers to take their job very seriously, stating that they were role models and were saddled with the responsibility of impacting knowledge on the children. He charged those on duty to be rededicated to duty, noting that government would reward committed and hard-working teachers.Kubo was also in Marama, Hawul council area of Borno State, where the community complained about alleged encroachment on their land. He pledged to bring up the issue at the State Executive Council (SEC), while the contractor building new classrooms in the area to stop, because of poor quality of job.
