Help me! I don't want to lose my home

Published by Tribune on Sun, 24 Jun 2012

Dear Taiwo,Please, help me before I lose my sanity. I don't know if the recent happenings in my home and marriage will break it up, but I am afraid if I would remain the same if I do not get help now.I am 29, a mother of a seven 'month-old baby boy. I got married two years ago and I thought I knew the man I married until recently when he showed me the stuff he is made of. This also made me wonder if truly a man can actually love his wife more than his mother.I lost my first pregnancy due to stress. As expected, I was advised to take things easy when I became pregnant again. To ease my burden, my mother-in-law came to help and stayed with us. I should let you know that I lost my mother at a very tender age; an only girl in the midst of four boys, I was raised by my father and other siblings. This was why the responsibility of coming to stay with me fell on my mother-in-law.We were very close and I relate with her as my mother, until recent developments. After giving birth to my baby, it was unanimously agreed between the three of us; my husband, mother-in-law and I that I would need a helper around the house as mama cannot afford to stay forever. We tried getting a housemaid, but it was not easy, so mama decided to bring in her niece, who had just lost her mother. It was agreed that she would live with us and continue her schooling. I honestly have nothing against this decision, she is only 13. I can imagine what she is going through because I lost my own mother at about the same age too. She however isn't lucky to have a father and I felt we could live together like sisters, a sister I never had.I was however wrong. Teniola, came and turned my home upside down, I don't seem to understand the background she was coming from. She is so unruly and rude, bed wets and steals. She would deep her fingers in the pot and steal meat. No matter how I tried to make her feel at home she was just not receptive to my olive branch.Mama was aware of all she did and whenever I raised this with her, she would advise that I should be patient with her. I enrolled her in a private school and it was discovered that she wasn't so bright, so I employed a home lesson teacher. Whenever her teacher came round, I would have to plead and pet her to do her lesson. The situation became so unbearable for me, she was supposed to help me around the house, but she ended up adding to my stress. When I couldn't take it any longer, I had to discuss with mama. I never knew I did something wrong by discussing with mama how I felt about Teniola's attitude and behaviour.(To be continued)
