Organisations Can Achieve High Performance, Say Corporate Leaders

Published by Guardian on Sun, 24 Jun 2012

President/Chairman of Council, the Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM), Micheal Olawalep-Cole has tasked companies to develop and explore new strategies necessary to lead workforce in their organisations to success. Olawale Cole was speaking at this year's Women in Management and Leadership Conference, which, held at in Lagos. For organisations to achieve organisational performance, he said, they must improve on their performance regularly.'For any organization to stand the test of time, it must have unusual performers at the helm of affairs driving activities. This means efficient management of human and material resources. Also, for any organisation or a country to have a sustained growth, right attitude and management processes must be in place,'' he said.He noted that the collapse of some seemingly strong and well-managed organisations in recent times could be traced to poor performance occasioned poor innovation. The implications of average performers in an organisation are too grave to contemplate.'CEO NOVO Consult, Ovo Alonge, said organisations that desire to be ranked high profile must strive to be excellent in their operations. This, she said, is the only way they can be excellent. 'High performance organisations (HPOs) are world models. They stand out in the crowd because like a golden fish has no hiding place.'I charge you to have passion in whatever you are doing. That is the only thing you can achieve success. Women are people of passion; without passion, organisations will not get to high performance level and remain there'.According to Alonge, every growing organisation needs building blocks to grow. These, she said, are what organisations need to do to get to the top. People, she noted, are organisation's most valued resources. Hence, she charged employers to pay attention to the people who work for them.'People are important. HPOs must employ people with the right skills, right attitude and right mindsets. With the right salaries and wages, employees will put in their best to help organisations to achieve set objectives'.She suggested that such is the reason every organisation should have a mission statement, which is expected to guide the conduct of staff and direct the organisation. Too many goals can make an organisation loses focus. 'Hence, the objectives and targets must be specific.'Consistency is very important. We must walk the talk and be clear about our plans. Today, it is no longer the golden rule but the platinum rule. A bad customer service is too expensive. Whatever you do, do it to the best of your ability. Think before you give any promise because unfulfilled promise can break a good relationship.'She charged HPOs to pay attention to technology, urging them to keep abreast of global competition and pay attention to ethics while winning teams.Director General, Lagos State Development Centre, Olubunmi Fabanwo, frowned at prevalence of unethical conducts in organisations, noting that upholding ethical values has led to phenomenal growth.'Ethics is all about moral choices and principles. The guidelines that are developed by groups, organisations and units do not spring from individuals but from central norms. These norms have become globally accepted.'Ethics, she explained, are principles and guidelines developed to ensure that there is consistency in people's actions. On her part, Deputy Director, Capacity Building, NIM, Jumoke Obasa, said the conference which started in 1987 in Benin, Edo State, has positively impacted on lives and work of top female managers from both private and public sectors. She explained that this year' theme: Moving Performance Beyond The Usual was chosen because it has become expedient due to the level of mediocrity among organisations.
