Self Discipline (III)Memory Verse: 'Now where the spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty (2 Cor. 3:16).Bible Passage: (Romans 14:14-23)Introduction:WE have examined the importance of moderation and balance in our Christian walk. People tout freedom in Christ as good reason to cast away all restraint. This is misleading (Romans 14:21). Let's take a deeper look at freedom in Christ and the need for self-control.Freedom In ChristFreedom from constricting rules, regulations and traditions is one of the unique and most attractive features of Christianity. We are quick to point out that Christians have a personal relationship with Christ and are free from the oppressive rigidity of tradition and the law. Christ confirmed that He indeed came to set the captives free (Isa 61:1; Luke. 4:18). The Truth sets free (Jn: 8:32). Jesus is the Truth (John 14:6). This sets Christianity apart from and at loggerheads with all other faiths (Acts 4:12).However, even this can be taken too far. It is circumscribed by obedience, holiness and love. Our freedom in Christ means we are now free to live holy lives, obey God and live in love with others (Gal 5:13. Rom. 6:15). Live as free men but do not use your freedom as a license for evil. Be less critical and show respect to everyone and lawful authority (1Pet 2:16-17). On the other hand, Peter was so steeped in tradition that he disobeyed an express instruction from God three successive times (Acts 10:9-16).ConclusionAll disobedience is sin. Christianity is not a body of rules. Freedom in Christ can be abused. Some are babes in Christ and others are more matured. We are all in process. We do not have the right to judge the servant of another (John 14:4).God will help us operate in the law of love and bring all disobedience into subjection in Jesus' name.
