When Your Spirit Is Under Attack (I)

Published by Guardian on Sun, 24 Jun 2012

WHEN your spirit is under attack, you are not useful to anyone around you or to God either. Blessings and favour will not locate you and the whole of your being will turn away from receiving blessings.People whose spirits are under attack come to church and hear testimonies of wonders that God is doing in someone else's life, and instead of rejoicing and telling themselves that if God can do it for that person, He can do it for them, they begin to feel resentful. They will be so filled with this that when it is time to sing, they will not be able to sing, and when it is time to dance, they will not be able to dance. When it is time to pray, they won't pray because they will feel there is no point praying since their last prayers were not answered. They act this way not because they are angry but because Satan is attacking their spirits. In Luke 15:11-32, Jesus tells the story of the prodigal son in which the younger son of a man demanded that his father give him his inheritance early. The son then squandered the inheritance on prostitutes and loose living until it came to the point where he was destitute. Recognising that the servants in his father's household were better off, the son resolved to go home. His father was overjoyed to see him alive and well and ordered that he be clad in the finest robe and the fattest calf be slaughtered to celebrate his return. The older son who had stood by his father all along was angry at the way his father received his younger brother. He felt that his father was unfair to him. In Luke 15:29-30, he said to his father, ''Look! All these years I've been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!' 'The reaction of the older son is the typical response of a person whose spirit is under attack by the devil. When you get angry over someone else's testimonies, then your spirit is under attack. Satan is sowing a terrible seed in your heart and corrupting your spirit. At this point, sin is chasing after you and awaiting an opportunity to enter into your life and destroy you. Many people whose spirits are under attack get so resentful when they perceive that others are being blessed more than they are that they go to the extent of no longer going to church because they feel that there is no point doing so.In Luke 15:31-32, we see the father's response to his older son's resentment. ''My son,' the father said, 'you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.'' In the same way, if we have been faithful and obedient to God, then we should be confident that our blessings are around the corner. The fact that we have not seen the manifestation of the blessings does not mean it is not coming. We should therefore not allow our resentment to give sin entry into our lives.Ecclesiastes 12:7 states, 'and the dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.' Man is made up of body and spirit. The human spirit is the essence of who we are and is given by God; it enables us to interact with the spiritual world, which first existed before the physical world. The human body is what allows us to relate with the physical world and it is secondary to the spirit because it is with the entrance of the spirit into the human body that the body receives life. Remove the spirit of a man and the man is dead. To find out what kind of person a man is, do not look at the physical appearance, which is merely a container, but find out what kind of spirit operates within.Pastor Seyi Ogunorunyinka is General Overseer, The Promised Land Ministries, Solution Ground, Surulere, Lagos, pastorseyiogunorunyinka@gmail.com
