Delta to train bakers on cassava bread production

Published by Tribune on Mon, 25 Jun 2012

The Delta State government has approved the training of master bakers on the production of cassava bread, according to a senior government official.Mr Sunny Ofili, the Special Adviser to Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan on Information Communication Technology (ICT), announced the plan at a news conference in Asaba on Tuesday.Ofili said that the training followed the Federal Government's recent policy on the use of cassava flour in bread production. He said that the training would focus on the application of cassava flour and wheat in the production of bread. He said that the government, through its Directorate of Science and Technology, was collaborating with the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) on the training.Ofili said that plans were on to organise other trainings and workshops on agro-processing, especially the processing of plantain into chips and flour.'The directorate and the council have taken giant steps by supporting small scale industries through grants, loans and provision of technical support services, organisation of training programmes and investment fora in the state.'So far, the directorate, through RMRDC, has acquired pineapple orchards in some parts of the state for fruit juice production due to the ban on the importation of fruit juice,' he said.On level of ICT in the state, Ofili said that the concept involved computer application training for students and teachers. He said that apart from training the students, internet facilities would be provided in selected schools across the three senatorial districts of the state.'We are going to introduce ICT laboratory with internet facilities in schools.'The justification of this is to enable students cope with online registration for examinations; sitting for examination as well as checking of results electronically,' he added.
