Yobe Plans Skills Acquisition Centre

TO address poverty, unemployment and harness the rich agricultural resources and solid minerals in Yobe State, the state government plans to establish a modern Skills Acquisition Centre to enable its growing youth population acquire business skills and craftsmanship in various trades, Governor Ibrahim Gaidam has stated.He disclosed this in Damaturu yesterday when the Emir of Fika and Chairman of the states Council of Chiefs, Alhaji Muhammadu Abali Ibn Muhammadu Idrissa led other royal fathers to congratulate him on his victory in last Tuesdays governorship election.He said the problems of youth employment is real and urgent and must be addressed to channel the energies of young men and women into productive and worthwhile means.Where youths are allowed to wander around without something to engage their imagination and energies, you allow a situation where such energies could be channeled to ends that may not be useful either to the youth themselves or to the communities in which they live, he said.Meanwhile, he said that the state government has already trained more than 10,000 youths drawn from the 17 local government areas of the state at the Skills Acquisition Centre in Kano in such crafts as carpentry, welding and knitting.He said the new centre will draw from the experiences and expertise of similar centers in Kano and elsewhere to cater for more youths.
